My advice to men considering the priesthood: My advice can only begin with an echo of our Holy Fathers. First, “Be Not Afraid”, God is calling you to something great. He wants your happiness and your holiness more than you do. He has a plan to give this to you. To receive the great gift of your vocation you need to learn to listen to God. As Pope Benedict explains, we must learn how to pray. Prayer is a conversation that involves listening on our part. Learn to be silent in prayer, spend time in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and if possible make a Holy Hour each day. Pray to God asking Him to send you a good spiritual director, this was key for me. Get close to your mother, Mary. She will be invaluable for your journey. Learn to pray the rosary well, every day. Read the lives of saints; also read Fulton Sheen’s A Priest is not His Own. Discover the depth of the sacrifice offered at each Mass and enter into it more deeply. Make good friends with other people striving for holiness. To reiterate my first point, learn to trust God. If it is too hard to trust Him with your whole life now, start with small things and build to greater things. He will give you the graces you need to follow and love Him.
Why I want to be a Priest: The fundamental reason I want to be a priest is because that is what God seems to be calling me to be. When you are in love, you want to be with that person and follow Him. If I do not listen to what God is calling me to be then I separate myself from the one I love. Now, more directly, the one thing that excites me about being a priest, the force that motivates me is bringing Christ to other people. He has given me so much joy and love; therefore, I want to help other people encounter Him. Priests bring Christ to people through the sacraments, especially through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Christ, working through his priests, has liberated me from sin and shown me a new life, this new life, this new freedom, is something I want all people to have.
Hobbies & Interests: I enjoy reading history, philosophy, theology, spirituality and lives of saints. I like to watch KU sports and Royals baseball. I am interested in prayer, liturgy and music. I also like to exercise, particularly running.
Influence: People: The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mary. My parents, Father Zachary of the Mother of God, Father Steve Beseau, Father Mitchel Zimmerman, Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, Saints Augustine, Aquinas, and Therese. My spiritual director. and the St. Lawrence Center at KU.
