My advice to men considering the priesthood:There is nothing you can lose by giving the seminary a try. If you’re not sure on what your vocation is, you’ll only learn more about what it actually is by spending some time at the seminary. Finally, a parked car never gets anywhere, so my advice to all young men thinking about the priesthood is just to go and give it a shot.
Why I want to be a Priest:
Above all, the answer is because I want to follow the will of God for me. I know that true happiness and the greatest amount of joy can only be obtained when one follows His will and so if He wants me to be a Priest, then that’s what I want too.
I find the opportunity to love so deeply as a Priest to be very attractive and desirable. As stated by Christ himself, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends (Jn 15:13).” This is exactly what a Priest does for his flock. He gives up everything so that he can give of himself completely and unreservedly to His people.
My favorite prayer has always been the famous prayer of St. Francis of Assisi where he asks, among many other things, to be an instrument of God’s peace. Each day of his life, the Catholic Priest fulfills this prayer by becoming an instrument of God’s peace, sowing love where there is hatred, granting pardon where there is injury, bestowing faith where there is doubt, and so on. In this way, the Catholic Priest becomes deeply united to Christ in an amazingly special and beautiful way, a way in which I would be more than happy to be called to.
Hobbies & Interests: Outside of praying and reading about the Saints, I like to keep up on the latest Physics and Astronomy news going on around the globe and enjoy getting the opportunity to discuss it with others. I can’t turn down an opportunity to go on a good hike or canoeing trip and enjoy a good puzzle or board game every now and then with friends. Besides that, I’m a pretty boring fellow.
Influence: Those who lived out true Catholic lives at Benedictine College including the many great monks there along with numerous priests I got to know while I was in Michigan but especially the Pastor and Parochial Vicar of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Ann Arbor, MI. |
